Why It Matters

Most shops can sell boots...the wrong boots. Few are selling the right fit.

Every mis-fit boot is a dissatisfied customer. Bad news travels fast. A trained boot fitter becomes a personal shopper. Add-on sales, returning customer sales, and new customer retention are all benefits of custom boot fitting. Together we can make boot fitting your biggest revenue stream.

Knowledgeable staff

The whole staff will know how to talk about boot fitting from start to finish, even if they aren't fitters themselves. Keeping customers engaged during the busiest of times reduces walkouts.

Missed add-on revenue

Custom footbeds, socks, Hotronic/Thermic foot warmers, custom liners... Customers trust their boot fitter!

Same process every time

Consistency is the key. All boot fitters will repeat the same process with every customer. Sizing, assessments, try on, footbed fabrication will be streamlined and effective. More sales closed with higher margin.

The Program

Three skills. Taught on your floor, with your customers.

Real time training with real customers.

A
Customer
Conversation

The Conversation

Your crew will learn how to start the conversation. What does the customer want and need? What are the concerns? Guiding the customer with their knowledge so they can make an informed decision about their purchase.

  • Structured intake questions that surface fit history and pain points
  • Reading experience level, terrain, and aggressiveness to steer boot selection
  • Turning hesitation into trust, without pressure tactics
B
Bio-mechanical
Assessment

Foot & ankle assessment for flex and footbed

Staff learn to perform a real bio-mechanical evaluation of the foot and ankle — range of motion, arch behavior, alignment — and translate it directly into a flex recommendation and a footbed build plan, instead of guessing off a size chart.

  • Weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing foot & ankle evaluation
  • Matching flex rating to the customer's biomechanics and ability
  • Determining the correct custom footbed style and posting
C
Shell & Liner
Modification

Modifications for real foot shapes

Bunions, hammer toes, wide forefeet, high insteps — your crew learns the hands-on shell and liner work needed to fit the boot to the foot, instead of forcing the foot to fit the boot, reducing returns and boosting confidence in every sale.

  • Shell punching and grinding for bony prominences
  • Liner modification techniques where shell mod won't do
  • Knowing when to modify vs. when to change the boot
Shop Setup Consulting

The right tools and layout make the whole system work.

Training only sticks if the shop is built to support it. Alongside staff training, we'll assess your space and make direct recommendations for both the back shop and the sales floor.

Back Shop Tooling

  • Grinders, stretching tools, and heat guns suited to your volume
  • Footbed fabrication setup and workflow
  • Shell and liner modification stations
  • Tool gaps that are currently sending work (and revenue) elsewhere

Front of House Workflow

  • Fitting area that is warm and inviting and supports a comfortable one on one experience
  • Visual merchandising that promotes add on sales from socks to helmets to skis and bindings
  • Traffic flow from the door to the fit bench to the register

"I've made just about every fitting mistake there is to make — let me help your crew skip over them."

The secret to great bootfitting is not speed of execution, it is getting it right the first time. It's not theory borrowed from a manufacturer's rep training — it's three decades of doing the job, distilled into something your crew can actually run on their own once I'm gone.

Pirate Bootfitting exists because too many shops are leaving the most profitable department in the building understaffed and undertrained. This program is built to fix that, on your floor, in a fixed number of days.
